How to Record Over an Old VHS

Many families have still kept the VHS (old format) video tapes. But what to do if the tapes are important and you do not want to discard them once and for all? They can be digitized at home and you do not have to overpay the studios offering similar services.

Nobody would have thought of a DVD-ROM two decades ago and almost everybody relied on the VHS format. However, these discs do not remain in optimum condition and there is a risk of losing all the data. Analogue recordings from VHS tapes can be saved after digitizing them and saving them to your hard drive.

Things Required:

– Photoshop
– SLR digital camera with manual exposure control and the ability to shoot in raw-format
– Raw-converter

Instructions

  • 1

In order to keep your computer save the information from VHS video tape, prepare the equipment for digitization. Use a Firewire cable (IEEE1394), which comes with hardware converter. Connect the converter to the IEEE1394 connector on the computer.

  • 2

Connect the VCR to the converter. To do this, connect the video recorder to the video input on the front panel of the converter with a cable connector RCA, colloquially referred to as the "tulip". Do the same with audio recorder and audio input of the converter.

  • 3

Turn on the VCR and rewind the tape to the beginning of the film. If the tape has not been used for a long time, rewind the tape to the beginning and forward it to the end several times.

  • 4

Press the Input Select («Input Selection") on the converter. Turn Analogue Inn («Analogue Input"). If the LED does not turn on, press the button one more time.

  • 5

Specify the location on disk where you want to save digitized video. Note that when you digitize video with an external converter, you will get a fairly large file size. Therefore, they should be saved to disk or a file system which can save files larger than four gigabytes.

Launch your PC DVIO. In the program window, click File («File"). In the window, specify a location to save the video and enter the file name. Click the "Save" button.

  • 7

Start digitizing the video. To do this, click on the Capture video from camera («Capture video from a camera") in the DVIO. Start playback on the VCR. In the program window, it will appear counter captured frames and pointer size of a recorded file.

  • 8

To end the recording file, click Stop («Stop"). Digitized video can now be edited using a video editor.
