How to Recover From a Finger Hit With a Hammer

It is a regular practice for carpenters and craftsmen to get their fingers smashed by missing a nail and hitting a finger instead. If a bruise or swelling is the only result of a hammer blow, you can recover from it in a matter of days employing a few simple techniques. However, in case of a severe injury such as profuse bleeding or a fractured bone, a doctor should be contacted right away.

    Act immediately and place injured finger in ice cold water or a pack of ice. It will not only prevent the injured finger from swelling instantly but will also ease the pain. Make sure you wrap the injured finger in a piece of cloth before starting the ice treatment.

    To recover from the injury as soon as possible, apply ice to the injured finger every fifteen minutes for the first couple of hours. For the next couple of hours, do not apply any ice. Following this schedule for at least forty eight hours should heal the injury. However, if the injured finger is not recovered even after two days, you should contact a doctor immediately.

    If the hammer strike caused an abrasion or cut on the finger, clean the wound and cover it with soft dressing. If the abrasion was too bad or the cut was too deep, you may have to get the wound stitched for proper recovery.

    If possible, keep the hand with the injured finger elevated above your heart. This will reduce blood flow in the injured finger, thus effectively reducing both pain and swelling. Keep the hand with the injured finger as still as possible for at least the initial two days. Use a sling to effectively immobilise the hand.

    To prevent movements which may cause excessive pain, tape the injured finger to the one next to it. This will help prevent swelling and pain causing movements of the injured finger.

    Ibuprofen dose can be helpful to recover from a hammer hit injury. But never administer an Ibuprofen dose to children because it can cause Ryes Syndrome.
