Water retention is considered to be one of the major symptoms of many medical conditions such as constipation, dehydration, heart diseases, kidney problems, hormonal changes and excess sodium in the diet. In medical terms, water retention is known as edema. If you are feeling heavy and bloated or there is an evident swelling on your legs, feet and other parts of the body, chances are high that you are suffering from water retention. Increase in body weight up to several pounds is also among the symptoms of water retention.

However, by being a little extra careful about your health, you can reduce water retention in your body.

    A high sodium level is one of the major causes behind water retention. Therefore, you should look to cut back on sodium in your daily diet. Try to avoid salty snacks, deli meats and other foods that contain a high level of sodium.

    You should maintain a very healthy diet in your daily routine, which should include fresh vegetables and fruit. Try to avoid junk food as much as possible.

    Proteins, calcium and vitamins

    If you are having deficiencies of calcium, protein, vitamin B1, B5 and B6 or magnesium, it can also lead to increase the water retention level in your body. If you are not having a proper diet, it is important to have nutritional supplements.

    Working out is extremely important if you are suffering from a high level of water retention. You should workout for a minimum of 20 minutes, which should help you reduce water retention. If you are reluctant to go to gym, you should just visit a park in your locality early in the morning or late in the afternoon and do some jogging and other exercises.
