How to Repair the Insulation on Curtains
Apart from boosting the decor of a room, curtains also serve as insulation agents, thus helping in keeping the energy bills in check. As a matter of fact, certain curtains are specifically manufactured for this purpose. Over the passage of time, insulation in curtains becomes damaged and has to be repaired. This task is fairly easy and should not take too long. Here is what you will need to repair the insulation on curtains.

– Insulation fabric
– Scissors
– Needle and thread
– Sewing machine
– Seam ripper
– Measuring tape
– Straight pins
– Fabric pen

Analyse the curtain panel to check the nature of damage. If a small area of insulation was torn, the best option if to simply patch it up. You will need a piece of new insulation which should be approximately 0.5 inches larger on all sides than the area to be repaired.

Temporarily attach the new insulation patch over the damaged area using straight pins. Using too many straight pins would be useless. Instead, you should use as few pins as possible to keep the new insulation patched pinned to the curtain panel.

Remove the curtain panel from the rails, hand sew the new insulation patch so that it stays in place and hang the curtain panel back in its original location. Remember to remove all the straight pins before re-hanging the curtain panel.

If the damage to the insulation was excessive, you will have to replace the entire insulated lining. Remove the curtain panel from the railing and lay it on a flat surface. Remove the seams on all side of the panel using a seam ripper and then remove the insulation which needs to be replaced. Use a tape measure to measure the curtain dimensions.

Cut out a piece of new insulation lining referring to the dimensions that you took earlier. Lay the piece of new insulation on the curtain panel which needs to be repaired.

Hold the replacement fabric attached to the damaged curtain panel using straight pins so that you can recreate the seam. Attach straight pins on bottom, left and right sides of the curtain. As for the curtain’s top side, pin the lining fabric below the tabs.

Recreate the original seam with a sewing machine on bottom, right and left sides. At the top side of the replacement curtain panel, sew along the original seam. Remove all the straight pins and re-hang the curtain.
