How to Report Suspected Identity Theft

If you suspect that someone else is using your credit card, driving license or any other important document, you must immediately report it to the nearest police station or any other agency that fights frauds and other crimes. Also, if you suspect someone is using your identification and ripping money from your credit or debit card, immediately report it to the debt collector and get these cards either cancelled or change of your identification details such as card pin code. A little slackness can deprive you of your money, so do not waste any time in reporting a suspected identity theft.

    Report Loss of Wallet

    Report loss of your wallet the moment you become aware of it, no matter if it is stolen, lost or you have forgotten it at any place. The nearest reporting point is your police station and after doing that get a copy of identity theft report.

    Contact Credit Fraud Agencies

    In addition to reporting to the police, you should also contact the credit card bureaus to alert them and they can help you track your item down.

    Report to Debt Collectors

    In addition to reporting to law enforcement agencies, you should report the loss of your credit cards to debt collectors, and get your card frozen or blocked, immediately. For this you should read and compare your credit reports carefully and regularly. Also, you should keep receipts of all your transactions to get any confusion clear about any expense from your credit card.

    Also, you should immediately report to your bank that your credit or debit cards have been lost and get them blocked immediately. You should also advise your bank not to clear any cheque or direct debit request from your account until you are settled with the fraud issue. It is possible that your bank refunds some of the stolen money from your account.

    Get all Other Documents Cancelled/Blocked

    You can separately phone other departments such as motor license agency, social security department, revenue and taxation department, benefits department and anti-fraud agencies to alert them about loss of your documents and get them cancelled or blocked immediately.

    You can also follow up the case of identity theft after reporting it to all concerning authorities and departments. You might be able to identify some of payments made by a fraud person on your behalf. It is a possibility that you might be able to contribute towards further securing the system against frauds and help prevent other people from becoming victims.
