Stray dogs generally have a lot of diseases because of the pollution and dirt that they have been exposed to. They need to be taken to the vet so that they can be examined. You should also be extremely careful when handling them, as they may bite you and cause you harm.

Take the dog to a vet
First of all, take the dog to a vet to check whether it has any diseases or not. The vet will take scans of the dog to see whether it has any viruses that can be contagious or harmful for those around it. This is extremely important and it should be the first thing you should be doing. -

Place an ad for the dog
Then, to find the owner of the dog, place an ad in the local newspaper. This will help in finding the people who own it. You can also get flyers printed with the dog’s picture on them and distribute them in nearby areas. -

Drive around the neighbourhood to check for the owner
There is a significant chance that the dog has come from a nearby area, so you can drive around the neighbourhood to check if some people are out in search of the dog. You may find the true owners through this process but it may prove a little difficult. -

Take it to Animal Control
You can take the dog to Animal Control. You will have to register the dog with a number and you can find out the status simply by telling them the registration number. People generally go to Animal Control when any of their pets go missing. -

Put it up for adoption
If you are unable to find the owners of the dog, you can put it up for adoption. Make sure you meet the people you are giving the dog to, to ascertain that the dog will be in safe hands.
