How to Socialize at a Family Reunion

With people from the same families spread out far and wide across cities and even countries, it is not possible to stay in touch with your loved ones on a regular basis. This is exactly why people arrange family reunions, so that everyone in the family can come together at a decided place and time, and catch up with each other before going off to live their own lives once again.

Most family reunions are arranged once or twice a year, and in special cases, maybe even sooner than that. While these reunions are a great way to stay in touch, other than having to gather again at unfortunate events like a funeral, socializing with all the relatives you haven’t seen in a while can be a bit awkward. However, there are certain things you can do to break the ice.

    Dress to impress

The impression you make at a family reunion is what will get you noticed and what will draw others towards you for conversation and socializing. If you were unable to garner any attention at the last family reunion, try dressing up impressively this time around. You will surely turn some heads and family members will naturally gravitate towards you.

Handing out the food and drinks

A great way to socialize at any occasion, including family reunions, is by handing out food and drinks to people. It is also a great way to get back in touch with the people you had a good time hanging out with last time, and makes for a perfect way to approach them if you are a little hesitant to do so again this time around.  If the food arrangement is more of a buffet style, getting into the mix with people at the buffet line is also a good way to socialize.

    Take your buddy

Taking a friend to a family reunion is a great way to initiate more socializing at the event. Take someone who you are comfortable talking to, and have a good relationship with. Use him or her to control the other conversations with family members, so that they do not go stale, and you can both work on talking to whomever you like together. This is also a good way to introduce family members to your friend.

    Be open minded

Not everyone has the same mindset as you, and may not be as traditional or liberal as you may be, which is why you have to be a little open minded when you are talking to others on a variety of issues. Make sure you maintain a balanced perspective, and do not get into any arguments with people - being open-minded will make you more likeable, and easier for people to socialize with.
