How to Soften Brown Sugar
It is normal for brown sugar to harden, especially in areas where excess moisture is present. People often throw hardened lumps of brown sugar away. However, there are a number of ways in which you can soften and thus put hardened brown sugar to good use. As a matter of fact, softening brown sugar is very simple and takes no special effort. Furthermore, the things you will need would already be present at your home.

1
Soft Bread Method
Add the hardened brown sugar lumps to a plastic bag that can be sealed at the opening. To the same bag, add a piece of soft bread. Properly seal the plastic bag’s opening and set it aside for a few hours, depending on the quantity of brown sugar in the bag. Open the sealed bag and you will see that the brown sugar lumps are soft once again. -
2
Microwave Solution Method
Add the brown sugar lumps you want to soften to a microwave-proof bowl. Place the bowl in a microwave and zap the contents of the bowl for a few seconds. Take out the bowl and check if the sugar lumps are softened. Zap once again if required. -
3
Damp Method
Add the sugar to a large glass bowl. Take a thick cloth such as a tea towel and dampen it with water. Cover the glass bowl containing the sugar lumps with the dampened tea towel and set the bowl aside overnight. Check in the morning and the sugar lumps would be fairly soft. -
4
Slice of Apple Method
Place hardened sugar lumps in a sealable plastic bag and then add a slice of fresh apple to the bag. Seal the plastic bag’s opening and set it aside for a few hours. Open the bag to find that the sugar has softened. -
5
Aluminium Foil Method
Wrap the brown sugar you want to soften in a large enough piece of aluminium foil and bake in an oven preheated at a temperature of 300 degrees Fahrenheit for about 5 minutes. Take out aluminium foil and it let it cool for sometime. The brown sugar you wrapped in the foil would be soft once again.
