How to Spot Expensive Jeans

Jeans are arguably the most popular type of casual wear in the world. Made from denim or dungaree, jeans were first invented by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss at the end of the 18th century. Initially designed for workers and cowboys, their popularity sky rocketed in the 1950s, when late Hollywood actor James Dean wore jeans in the movie ‘Rebel without a Cause’. The rest, as we say, is history; jeans have now become a necessity among teenagers and adults alike, and come in various fits and styles, such as skinny, straight, narrow bottom, boot cut etc.

With the evolution of the garment, and the establishment of various companies and brands, buying a pair of your choice can be daunting, as there are many options to choose from. When choosing, keep in mind that not all jeans are made equal – some are more expensive than others, and this is for a reason. The more costly varieties are impeccable in terms of fitting, comfort, and cut,  making them prized possessions for many.

The basic feature to watch for when it comes to buying expensive jeans is the choice of fabric, as revealed by Slowey, the fashion director at lifestyle magazine Elle.

"Denim starts out like burlap, and through expensive processing, designers are able to make them feel like soft cotton," reveals Slowey. "There's some jeans that cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars that will actually form to the shape of your body overtime. They will flatter your silhouette and make you appear longer and leaner."

Moreover, expensive jeans will never show signs of wear and tear, even if they are been worn for the hundredth time. "When you're paying more money, you're actually getting a jean that isn't going to lose its wash," she says.

Designer jeans have always been in demand, but it is important to note that they are not mass produced, or easily available at most retail outlets. You will learn more about them through various media streams or identify them by their unique designs. For instance, not all denim jeans are created equally, so various designs will be marketed differently. Most designer brand jeans are usually first worn by a celebrity. Celebrities further have the option of customising their wear, and they often attach diamonds or imprint embroideries on their back pockets. If you are looking for a pair of expensive jeans, keep an eye on what the rich and famous are wearing.

Most expensive jeans come in straight leg fitting, and can be bought from specialty boutiques. They are termed off-rack items due to the high price attached to them.  Another trademark of expensive jeans is that most of the people wearing them will avoid using belts.
