How to Start an Ant Farm at Home

There are many different kinds of hobbies that people have. Some of these are just for a bit of fun while others allow a person to engage in a learning process. It generally takes a bit of an effort to stay in touch with one’s preferred activities.

One of the hobbies that can add a bit of fun and give you a chance to learn something about the nature is making an ant farm at home. It is quite a simple task which can be done with little effort. Not much is needed to do in order to maintain this farm either. You can in the process get some firsthand knowledge of the ants.

Things Required:

– Fish Bowl
– Cardboard Tube
– Soil
– Sugar
– Jar

Instructions

  • 1

    Fill the Fish Bowl

The first thing is to place the cardboard tube in the fish bowl in a way that one of the sides of the tube is facing outwards. Fill in the bowl afterwards, and soil up to two to three inches from the top.

    Get Some Ants

You can get some ants from a local park or play ground. All you need to do is to identify a colony and place a jug with sugar in it. Soon hoards of ants should be coming to the jar and once you have sufficient numbers, you can take the jar to your own colony. You can also carefully dig them but that will risk the existence of the colony as it can collapse.

  • 3

    Get the Queen

The ants need the queen to survive so you will need to get her a well. It has a slightly larger thorax and it is generally coloured black. It will be protected by other ants and you may get some bites as you take it out. It can be found near eggs and in small anthills.

    Food and Water

Make sure that you provide the ants with food and water as they work to make their new colony. They generally eat most things and bread crumbs, honey and syrups are among the favourites. It is important that the ants get water regularly as they can die in a day without it. Place a cotton ball in the colony and add some water to it every day.
