How to Stay Safe on an Extension Ladder
Extension ladders are really beneficial when working in high places as you can adjust the distance from the ground and they are easy to carry. However, these types of ladders can also be dangerous as you can lose your balance if steps are not in good condition or not placed on a flat surface.
This does not mean that you should avoid using an extension ladder to reach high areas but you should be vigilant while climbing up and standing on the steps of ladder. All you need to do is to take care of couple of things.

Check the ladder before using it. Make sure that its feet, pulley, rope and locks are in good working condition. It is a simple exercise and you do not to be an expert to inspect the ladder. Just visually examine the condition and fix the problem if there is any. Use a ladder that is made of quality material. Generally, they are made of fiberglass, aluminum or wood.

You should also make sure that there is no crack, split or corrosion as it can be dangerous. If there is any then do not pass over and arrange for an immediate repair. Do check that steps of the ladder are free from oil or grease as you can slip. Meanwhile, the moving parts of the ladder should be greased properly so that they operate smoothly.

Read the instructions before climbing up. You should not extend the ladder more than its recommended size otherwise there is a danger of breakage. Similarly, do not exceed the load capacity as you can hurt yourself by going against the advice.

Now, when you have gone through ladder safety inspection, you need to place it somewhere flat and even. Make sure that the ladder is not setup in front of a door or in a walkway. If you need to work in these areas then make a fence to create a safety zone.

Do not use metal ladders near electrical poles, lines and equipment as any negligence can put your life in danger.

Wear proper shoes while working on the ladder. You should also ensure that your shoes are free of mud or other things that can make you fall from the steps. Avoid standing or working on the top steps.

Do not carry tools in your hands rather you should use a belt to carry all these things.
