How to Store Butane for a Lighter

People who are regular smokers are often very particular about their lighters. Those who own refillable lighters understand that having a can/bottle of butane fuel is necessary even if their lighters last long after every refill. In case the lighter runs out of butane, it can be very irritating for cigarette or cigar smokers, who may have to look for matches etc.

Butane lighters are preferred by smokers because they do not alter the taste of a pipe, cigarette or cigar. The fuel is readily available in compressed cans and can be stored for long.

Instructions

  • 1

    Buy a butane container

Butane is readily available in the market under different brands and quantities. You should always go for a branded can of butane since it is safer, as compared to a low quality bottle, which may be a little cheap in price. Butane fuels come in pressurized containers and most of the times instructions about usage and storage are printed on the can.

  • 2

    Find a safe place

Proper storage of butane is very important because it can be dangerous if handled carelessly. Therefore, it is imperative that you keep the butane container away from children. Good quality butane containers have the ability to withstand high temperatures, and can be stored well even if you live in a warm area.

  • 3

Store in a cool and dry place

A butane container can be stored anywhere in the house but needs to be kept away from direct sunlight, which can raise the container's temperature to unsafe levels. The butane container should be placed in a dry and cool place, away from any heat source.

  • 4

Do not store butane in your vehicle

While keeping the container in your car can be convenient if your lighter runs out of fuel, it is not recommended at all because the temperature in a vehicle is often on the higher side.

You should always store the butane at home. If you are going on a long trip then the best option is to refill your lighter before leaving as it is likely to last at least a month and a half.

  • 5

Keep an eye on the tip of a butane canister

In order to avoid leakage, you should check the tip of the container whenever you refill your lighter. If the tip is damaged, you should properly dispose the container and purchase a new one.
