Boudoir photography involves capturing the essence of romance, passion and intimacy in a women’s private room or bedroom. The photographs are sensual and in some cases erotic, which is why this kind of photography is either reserved for a loved one, or for men’s magazine.

Start off by planning the lighting, which is one of the most important things when it comes to photography of any kind, with boudoir photography being no exception either. Boudoir photography sessions typically take place in private studios due to the nature of the shot, which is why you will need to have studio lightings. In case you do not have studio lightings, improve the lighting of the room by using work lights on tripods, indirect window lighting and your camera flash as an alternate. Lighting should be done in such a way that no shadows are created on the model’s face.

In order to give a sensual feel, spend some time on setting up the background. You can hang a canvas to block out any furniture that may be a bit distracting, or hang a plain coloured sheet, which is commonly used as a background in boudoir photographs. White and black are two of the most popular background colours that are used to create a sensual effect. Arrange a light behind the model and towards the background in such a way that it prevents her from casting a shadow on the background.

You will need to gather props for your photos. If the photos are being taken on a sofa, then you will need to have cushions that the model would be resting her head or legs on. If the model is sitting or lying on the bed, then you will need to have pillows and a bed sheet. If a living room setting has been prepared by you for the session, then add a folding coffee table, chairs, etc. Feel free to add feather boas, roses and other such items.

In order to get a great shot of the model, it is imperative for her to feel relaxed. Do not rush her into anything. Instead, be patient and keep talking to her. Making her laugh would be a good way to make her relax. Let her keep the robe on for as long as she likes. If the model is not comfortable with nude shots, then give her a prop such as a hat to cover the sensitive areas.

To make the model fit into the boudoir photography theme, ask her to bring along apparel items. Lingerie or thigh-high sheer stockings are two of the most popular items that are featured in boudoir photography. However, the model can also go for a man’s oversized shirt. Ask the model for her opinion on how to make the scene really sensuous.

A boudoir photography session typically lasts for one to two hours. It takes a bit of time for the model to feel relaxed in the surroundings, especially if she has agreed to getting shot in the nude. Make sure you give the model enough time to relax and help her out in any way you can.
