How To Teach a Seniors Workshop

There are certain workshops designed for aging professionals as they seek to familiarize themselves with the current technology and hone their skills. The topic under discussion could vary from fitness and art to online surfing which benefits adults in terms of keeping them busy, while further allowing them to keep in touch with their close ones.

However, teaching a seniors workshop will be a totally different experience when compared to spending time with college or school students. Keeping in mind the age factor, several seniors may be suffering from various health issues, making your task more challenging.

Pick a topic of your choice. You will need to have total command on it. For instance, if you are teaching seniors the advantages of going to gym or maintain fitness, then make sure to incorporate only those exercises which they can perform easily. Moreover, when teaching someone how to use social networking websites for example, make sure to start from the basics.

Make them feel comfortable. It is necessary as only then they will be interested in learning new concepts. Some may be impaired so you must address loudly and clearly.  Giving personal attention is also important where asking them about their interests and habits will help you cater to their needs. Don’t move ahead until you are convinced that they have made progress.

Be sympathetic but understand that you are the boss. Your aim should be to ensure that your students have learned something rather than just attending the workshop for the sake of it. Use every necessary tool which will allow the seniors to make serious progress. Use microphone or video examples if necessary.

Plan everything in detail. The idea of attending a workshop will be new to some seniors as many would have pursued work straight after their college days. Make sure you make the adjustment process smooth so that they can encourage others to take part in such workshops.

Don’t complicate things. Keep everything as brief and simple as possible. While teaching the benefits of internet, avoid using slang or terms which have unclear meanings. Seniors will better understand any concept if you use layman terms. However, make sure that you incorporate the necessary words in order to avoid confusion. Handing out notes in large font will help them improve their knowledge about certain terms.
