How to Teach your Child to Sleep in their own Bed

A child is habitual of sleeping with their parents from the time of birth. You wake up for them the whole night when they cry and need caring. Eventually they grow up and comes a time when they should be sleeping in their own room. It is a transition that most children resist as they feel security and a sense of affiliation to their parents’ beds. The transition although difficult, is important.

Many kids have fear of nightmares and darkness scares them. They are afraid to sleep alone and seek refuge in their parents. The monsters that have been used to put them to sleep lurk in their minds making them afraid. You need to get your child to talk about his/her fears with you. Make them understand that the fear is pointless. Give them some tools that will give them a sense of protection against the fears. A flashlight or a monster spray will help them feel secure.

Try to decorate your child’s room in a way that it seems appealing. It should appear more inviting then yours. Usually the master bedroom has a big fluffy bed which is inviting and gives a grand effect. Try to make your child’s room warm and unique. Add a feather bed with soft pillows and also decorate it with the pictures of his/her favorite character. It should have a lot of lights and colors so that it looks comfortable.

If the child is used to hugging and snuggling with you, do not take that away from him. Give them there snuggle time in the morning when they wake up or put them to sleep yourself.  If he/she is sleeping in their own bed, you could allow them to come to your room in the morning for some snuggle time. This will make them feel attached to you.

You need to be persistent. The first few times they might come back to you after a while and refuse to sleep alone. Be tactful and send them back. If they keep on whining, you will have to give in once or twice but do not melt every time. When the child gets a little older, lock your room so that they cannot come in themselves. This will also make them learn how to knock before entering and they will be forced to go back when you do not open the door.
