How to Teach Your Self a Language

Research has shown that with time the human brain tends to slow down. This generally happens when we settle into a routine and are no longer giving it newer challenges, telling it to perform the same tasks over and over again.

Learning a new language is a great way to keep it going and in healthy state. Doing that at home is very much possible, provided a structured approach is taken towards the endeavour. All you need to do is to be committed and you should be able to learn it pretty quickly.

    Select a Language

    Select a language that you will like to learn. Consider whether you are learning this because of some need or you are doing is just for the sake of the activity, and knowledge. In case of the latter, you should choose a language that you are fond of and have always liked.

    Books

    Get a couple of books to understand the basic structure of the language and to get some basic vocabulary as well. This is the first step in learning any language. Once you learn some basic words and understand the structure, you will be able to start basic communication.

    Videos

    Also see videos in the language you are trying to learn. Ideally there should be learning videos as well. The videos will add to your knowledge, providing you with visual and audio aides. They also help in understanding the right pronunciation.

    Practice

    Practice speaking the language as much as you can. Ideally, find some coworkers or friends who speak the same language and talk to them in it as much as you can. This will increase your fluency and also allow you to learn quicker. It is also an excellent way to improve your pronunciation of words.

    Watch Television Programs

    Watch television programs in the language that you are learning. Ideally these should be with subtitles so that in case you do not know a word, you can read the meaning right away. It will also help in developing better speaking and listening skills, and increase your fluency in the language.
