How to Throw a Lariat

Many of us would have witnessed scenes of cowboys throwing a lariat in movies or while training horses in real. It is one of the most common visuals from the Old West. Seeing the cowboys throw lariats, one gets an impression that it is quite an easy practice; however, this is not true because it takes years of practice before you can start hitting the target consistently.

Young boys and girls, who are learning the art of horse riding, as well as cowboys of the modern world, spend hours practising to throw the lariat perfectly.

Instructions

  • 1

    Manila rope

In order to throw the lariat perfectly, the weight of the rope plays a crucial part. Most experts recommend a manila rope of 35 feet and 3/5 inch. It is considered to have the perfect weight for accurate throws.

    Form a Honda

You need to form an eye with the rope by tying an overhead knot and passing through an end. Make sure that the eye is at least 3 to 4 inches long. Now you need to bind another overhead knot on the rope’s shorter end to ensure that the rope does not pull out. The longer end of the rope needs to be passed through the honda, which will create a lasso.  In order to prevent the honda from wearing and adding some weight to the rope, you would have to wind a wire around it.

Shake the rope and make a noose

While holding the honda in your hand, you need to shake the rope to avoid any kind of kinks or twists in it. The next step is to make a four feet long noose. The honda should be allowed to hang halfway down from the outside.

    Coil the rope

Grab the lasso in your right hand if you are a right-hander and make coils of about 16 to 18 inches with the other hand. As each coil is being formed, give half a turn to your rope to avoid any twists. The honda must remain on the outside while you are making coils.

Remember that coiling is one of the most important aspects in lariat throwing because the rope will come out of your hand smoothly if the coils are perfect.

    Throw the lariat

By holding the rope to your left hand, you need to swing it above your head to win it up. This will help you aim the target. When you throw the lariat, you should be completely concentrating on the target.
