How to Turn Android Into a Walkie Talkie
There are several apps available for the Android platform which allow users to communicate over the internet as opposed to traditional cellular networks. Popular apps like Skype and Viber allow you to talk over the internet, just like you would over a normal network. However, if you want to use your Android device like a Walkie Talkie, you can do so by downloading an app.
Instructions
-
1
Either run the Google Play Store app on your device or access the web version of the store from your computer (internet connectivity on your device and desktop is required).
-
2
Using the search option, look for an app called ‘Voxer Walkie-Talkie PTT’, developed by Voxer.
-
3
Tap the install button (it is a free app) to download the app. It will be automatically installed after download and your notification panel will also be updated. Now you can run the app from either the panel or the app drawer.
-
4
The app’s main screen will prompt you to enter your login details. New users can either login using their Facebook accounts or tap the ‘Sign up’ button to register.
-
5
The Sign up option takes you to another window where you will have to enter your e-mail address, a password, your first and last names and your phone number (along with the country and city codes).
-
6
After entering all the details, tap the Sign up button to proceed. The app will then connect with the server and register you with the given details.
-
7
Once you are logged in, you will see a top bar with the Voxer logo and a contacts button on the right corner. You can tap that button to access your contacts and choose to import your existing ones.
-
8
Back on the main page, there will be an option saying ‘Invite friends to use Voxer’. You can tap that option to select contacts from your address book. If you wish to use your device like a Walkie Talkie, you will need a partner. This is where you send a request to the person you want to talk to.
-
9
There will also be a thread by the title of ‘Walkie’. This is a computer generated thread and serves to show you examples on how you can use the app to communicate with friends. Tap the thread to open it.
-
10
The computer generated thread will have different automated messages. There will be a text message, a message sharing location, a picture message and a voice message. Tap the voice message to play the sample.
-
11
At the bottom of the screen you will see the ‘Hold and Talk’ button, press and hold it as you speak your message. When you release the button, your message will be sent as a voice clip. Now you can invite your friends and communicate with them for free as long as both parties have internet connectivity.
