How to Use an Analytical Balance

An analytical balance is used for the accurate measurement of mass. It is extremely reliable, but requires extreme care and precision during handling.

High quality analytical balances possess weighing pans which have transparent doors to make sure that not even one particle of dust affects the result of the calculation. It balances the load on the platform through an electromagnetic force; the amount of current used to precisely balance the load will be proportional to the load on the platform, which helps in making the analytical balance accurate.

Instructions

  • 1

    Locate the levelling bubble

You need to level your balance while locating the leveling bubble, which normally appears at the middle of the surface of the weighing chamber.

A turn of the analytical balance’s leveling screws should work for you if the bubble in not right in the middle.

The levelling screws are located at the base and the back of the analytical balance.

    Close the analytical balance’s doors

The analytical balance’s doors should be closed while you zero your balance. You need to control the bar buttons, which are available at the front of the analytical balance. If not, then depress the balance.

Make sure that all the zeros appear on the balance.

    Use a weighing container

If you are weighing granules, liquid or powder, you would have to use a weighing container. Using the container is quite simple. Once you have placed it on the analytical balance’s pan, press the control button or the bar after closing the door.

Wait for some seconds before the zeroes appear. The analytical balance will automatically subtract the weight of the container from the total load.

You need to take out the container and insert your material when you are done with the process. Now put the container on the pan again and close the doors. Otherwise, you can also place the matter on the balance pan by using tongs or other tools.

    Check the display for results

You can now see the mass or the weight of the material on the graphical display, which is going to be extremely accurate.
