How to Win at Yahtzee Board Game

Yahtzee is a popular dice game, similar to poker dice and cheerio. Currently owned by Hasbro, the game was originally marketed by the E.S Lowe Company before it was purchased by the Milton Bradley Company. Yahtzee is majorly a game of luck, with players rolling five standard dice, hoping to land poker-like combinations – Three-of-a-kind, Four-of-a-kind, Full House, Small Straight, Large Straight, Yahtzee and Chance. All of these combinations account for points, with the Yahtzee combination being the most scoring (50 points for first Yahtzee, 100 for second). A single Yahtzee game lasts about 30 minutes, and if you are careful about certain things, you can make the best of your play even if lady luck is not exactly on your side.

Instructions

  • 1

You need to stay focused on scoring in the upper section of the board in the start. If you are able to score a total of 63 points, you will get 35 points as bonus, which are essential if you want to win a game. Any time you land 4s, 5s or 6s, fill in the top column and make chances for a Three-of-a-kind later.

  • 2

Don’t be persistent in your attempts to land a Full House in the early stages of the game. Make do with what you get and wait for the Full House to come when it will.

  • 3

If you are lucky enough to land a small straight (four dice in a sequence – 2,3,4,5 for example) take your chances with a large one (five sequential dice) because a small straight is your best bet for a large one.

  • 4

Fill in the 1s and the 2s in the upper section and don’t waste them. They will be useful when it comes to meeting the bonus point requirement.

  • 5

Don’t use your Chance early in the game. Keep it handy for later, in case you hit a dry run. The Chance is an ace up your sleeve, use it wisely.

  • 6

If you hit one Yahtzee, trying getting more. While the first Yahtzee is only worth 50 points, if you are able to make a second, or a third, which is very hard, they will get you a huge total of 100 points each. In the end, it is all about scoring more than your opponents.
