How to Write an Opinion Piece in Your Newsletter

A newsletter is a bulletin which is periodically issued to the members of a society, an organization or a business. Societies also publish calendars and recipe lists, but  newsletters are infinitely more popular, and can be an extremely effective tool for communicating with the concerned people. It is often noted that opinion pieces are rarely used in newsletters, which generally contain news and updates – however, if written professionally, an opinion piece in a newsletter can be extremely effective when it comes to persuading people to change their behaviour, and to educating them.

Apart from creating awareness in a society, you can also draw people into a healthy argument and debate through an effective opinion piece. While it might seem like a daunting task, writing an opinion piece for publication in a newsletter is a lot easier than most people think.

    Come up with an idea

In order to write an opinion piece which is worthy of being published in your newsletter, you have to come up with a special idea which is related to the people of your community, or of interest to the target audience of the newsletter. For this purpose, you need to thoroughly assess the problems of your community, and see how things can be improved. You have to make a list of priorities and consider issues which need to be addressed on an urgent basis. At the same time, you also need to remember that writing is all about ideas and imagination.

An idea should be such that it gains the attention of your neighbours and other people in the community; e.g. it can be about the pros and/or cons of spraying chemicals in the area to counter bacteria, or even about the sewage which has been causing problems for the locality.
