List of Royal Palaces in London

British Royal family have numbers of Royal residences across UK and they are often called Royal palaces and are the property of Crown and they are also held under the trust of Monarch. Some of these Palaces are not used for residences and are used for tourist attractions or Museums. The Royal palaces are considered to be exempt from different types of rulings such as levying duty on the alcohols and drinks sold in the bars of the palaces and many other exemptions. It is also not allowed to arrest any person within the the Royal Palace’s boundary. All of these palaces are looked after by the property section of Royal Household and they are responsible for the maintenance and up gradation works etc. whereas the palaces that are no longer used as a residence are managed by the Historic Royal Palaces Agency. There are several Royal Palaces located in London as well and almost all of them are managed by the Historic Royal Palaces Agency, the step by step list of these palaces is given below.

    Tower of London


    The Tower of London was founded back in 1066 and is one of the oldest Royal Palace in UK it is also called as her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress. The Palace is located on the north bank of river Thames in Central London and is integrated within Tower Hamlets Borough.

    Hampton Court Palace


    The Hampton Court Palace is another Royal Palace which is situated in London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The Palace was used as a Royal residence until 18th century and after that it was no longer used as a residence of the Royal family. The Palace is located about 19 miles away from the central London in the south west direction. The Palace was built during the era of King Henry VIII for his favourite Cardinal Wolsey in 1529.

    Banqueting House


    The Banqueting House is located in Whitehall area of London and it is the largest survivor of banqueting housing style palaces. This building was designed by Inigo Jones and the construction was started in 1619 and was completed in the neo-classical style in 1622 and the total cost for the construction was £15,618.

    Kew Palace


    The Kew Palace is located in Kew Gardens near Thames' banks and serves as British Royal Palace. The Royal Palace serves as a tourist attractions and is open for visitors.This place had four palaces and all of them were called Kew palaces and only one of them have survived. The oldest Kew palace was first built by Samuel Fortrey in 1631.

    Kensington Palace


    The Kensington palace is a royal residence which is located in Kensington Gardens and integrated within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London. This palace is used for royal residence since 17th century and the palace also serve as official London residence of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Gloucester and Prince and princess Michael. The Palace is also used by Prince Harry and his cousin Zara Phillips.

    Buckingham Palace


    The Buckingham Palace London is serving royal residence of British monarch and it is located in City of Westminster and serves as a place for royal gatherings and royal hospitality. The original building of Buckingham Palace was built in 1705 for the Duke of Buckingham.

    Palace of Westminster


    The Palace of Westminster serves as the house of parliament and two of the main houses meet there i.e. the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The palace lies on north banks of Thames river in the City of Westminster. The palace is located very close to the Westminster Abbey, Whitehall and Downing Street. The original building of this palace was burnt in 1834 and then a complete new building which stands today was built.

    The Clarence House is also located in the City of Westminster on The Mall and is attached to the St. James's Palace. The Palace served as a home for the Queen Elizabeth for fifty years, from 1953 to 2002 and after that the palace is serving as official residence of the Prince of Wales, Prince Harry and the Duchess of Cornwall. The building was made from 1825 to 1827 and was designed by John Nash.

    St James's Palace


    The St James's Palace was constructed between 1531 and 1536 and it is one of the oldest royal palaces in London. The palace serves as official residence of the Sovereign. This palace has also served first three Georges and Henry VIII and this is the place where two children of Henry VIII were died.

    Bridewell Palace


    The Bridewell palace was made in 15th century and it served as official residence of Henry VIII, from 1515 to 1523 and then later in 1553 the palace was given to the city of London for homeless children by the Edward VI.
