History
MacDonald Cartier International Airport Ottawa has a very rich and long history. It was at fist opened at Uplands on a gigantic plateau of Canada and was therefore given the name as “Uplands.” Later on, Ottawa Flying Club shifted it to the Southern side of Ottawa. However, its nature of operation and name remained the same. This airport played very vital role during the World War II, when it was still known as Uplands. It hosted No. 2 Service Flying Training School for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, offering higher pilot training in Yale aircraft and Harvard.
Its name didn’t change until 1950s, but it successfully covered miles of success and was considered ones of the busiest airport in Canada in terms of takeoffs, landing and traffic.
Looking into the continuous progress of the airport, it was decided to reconstruct it properly. As a result, the construction project was commenced in 1957. The project was delayed for one year few times due to management related issues. However, the terminal was at last inaugurated by the Canada’s Prime Minister of that time, John Diefenbaker on June 30th, 1960. -
