Mackinnon Cocktail Recipe

The Mackinnon cocktail has a very special ingredient that has a disputed but rich history – the malt whiskey known as Drambuie. Word has it that Prince Charles Edward Stuart, in 1745, walked into Scotland and brought the recipe for this secret ingredient with him. The recipe for this special malt whiskey, flavoured with honey, herbs, and spices, was then taken up and preserved by the Clan Mackinnon, a Highland Scottish clan.

The Mackinnon cocktail uses this sweet malt whiskey as its base, in order to infuse it with its characteristic flavour. To balance out the sweetness of the Drambuie, the cocktail also contains soda and citrus, which compensate for the honey flavour by adding a contrasting effect of fizz and tang. This may not be an everyday drink, but if you need to pull something different out of the hat for a special occasion, look no further than the Mackinnon cocktail.

Preparation Time:
3 minutes
Serving Size: Serves 1 person

Ingredients:
– 2 ounces of Drambuie
– Half an ounce of white rum
– Half an ounce of fresh lemon soda
– Half an ouch of lime juice
– Chilled club soda
– Ice

Instructions

  • 1

Start by taking a cocktail shaker, and fill it up with ice cubes. Since this isn’t an average drink, you cannot simply put it in the refrigerator or drop ice cubes into the serving glasses in order to chill it. As the beverage is shaken up in the cocktail shaker, the ice cubes will subtly chill the drink, without diluting it or making it watery.

  • 2

Once the cocktail shaker is loaded with the ice, pour in the Drambuie, the white rum, the fresh lemon soda, and the lime juice – in short, all the ingredients except the club soda go into the cocktail shaker.

  • 3

Hold the cocktail shaker in whichever manner is most comfortable for you – holding it with both hands is more traditional, and more secure – and start shaking it vigorously. Continue shaking until all the ingredients have been mixed together.

  • 4

Once the cocktail has been shaken together, and been chilled, proceed to pour it out into a chilled highball glass (you may put this in the refrigerator, or even the freezer beforehand, for a short amount of time), and top it with the club soda.

Your Mackinnon cocktail is now ready. If you are making it for yourself, you can now kick back and enjoy the cocktail – however, if you plan to serve it to some guests, you might want to garnish it with thin strands of curled lemon peel, or even a small sprig of fresh herbs.
