Monument to the Great Fire of London

The Monument to the Great Fire of London, generally known as the Monument, is one of the famous attractions in the British capital as it is the tallest remote column in the entire globe. The Monument to the Great Fire of London was constructed on the site from where the Great Fire burnt down the first church. This monument is build from stone in a column shape and is to be found in the City of London, close to the northern side of the London Bridge. Its height is about 202 ft and it has 311 steps narrow winding staircase which is used to reach the top. On top is a cage which was added after six people committed suicide by jumping off this monument’s top between 1788 and 1842.

    History of Monument to the Great Fire of London:

    Monument to the Great Fire of London was built between 1671 and 1677. Joshua Marshall had the contract to build this tallest stone column and the total cost incurred on its construction was around £13,450. Monument to the Great Fire of London is also famous because in 1762, a writer named James Boswell made an attempt to climb the 311 steps of this highest point in the British capital to take a bird’s eye view of the city. However, halfway up, Boswell suffered a panic attack, but he still somehow managed with it and continued his journey to the top until eventually getting to the highest point in the end.
