Nexus 7 Tablet Infringes Nokia Patents
According to reports, Nokia has recently claimed that the recently launched Google Nexus 7 has infringed some of its patents.
Google Nexus 7 tablet was launched last week on Wednesday at the Google I/O conference. The Finish company accused Google of infringing on some of its WiFi patents that it owns. A representative from Nokia commented on the situation saying, “Nokia has more than 40 licensees, mainly for its standards essential patent portfolio, including most of the mobile device manufacturers. Neither Google nor Asus is licensed under our patent portfolio. Companies who are not yet licensed under our standard essential patents should simply approach us and sign up for a license.”
It is expected that Nokia would not file an injunction against Asus or Google, just like Apple did with Samsung. Apple filed injunctions against Samsung because of which the court has banned sales of Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the United States. Well, that’s not enough, the California based company is also looking forward to get the Samsung Galaxy SIII sales banned in the United States.
However, Nokia may ask both the companies to file for a proper license and in a worst case scenario, it would ask for royalties. Asus refused to comment on the current situation.
The Finish company is looking to make some money from the licensing fees instead of getting into a huge battle with both the companies, which would eventually prove to be very costly. So it would be good for Nokia to simply take royalty fees or licensing fees.
Nokia’s case is entirely different from Apple because it currently doesn’t have a direct tablet competitor with the Nexus 7. Apart from this, it’s nice to see Nokia wants a simple fix instead of a huge legal battle which has become more common in the tech industry as the market gets more competitive.
