Open Garden Squares Weekend in London

At Open Garden Squares Weekend, the public gets access to several Gardens not normally open for them. The event is held by London Parks and Gardens Trust and in year 2012, Open Garden Squares Weekend will be held in collabration with National Trust. The garden squares provide Londoners and tourists with a chance to escape from the dull monotony, and unwind in the open space surrounded by exquisite plants, flowers and trees. The picture perfect vegetation of Green squares provide an awesome chance to Londoners to make the most of their weekend. Guided walks at several venues help the visitors to get information about the Garden Squares.

    History

    The event was founded by Ms. Caroline Aldiss, in 1988 and about 40 squares were involved in the event. A dedicated group of volunteers continue to work for the event. In 2007, grants from the Heritage Lottery fund and English Heritage came in and helped the event to grow and expand to a great extent.

    Activities

    At the Open Garden Square weekend, people roam around and enjoy the biodiversity of the beautiful Garden Squares. Guided walks at the garden squares help the visitors to get to know the details of the Garden Square. People can also join or participate in Group Cycle Rides which are free, but one has to purchase a ticket to enter Garden Square.

    By Tube

    From the Westminster tube station, move West on Bridge St/A302 towards Canon Row. Keep following Great George St/A3214 and continue onto Birdcage Walk. Turn right onto Horse Guards Rd and then turn left. Turn right from there and The London Parks & Gardens Trust will be on your left. View Map

    The nearest bus stop is Westminster, Parliament Square (Stop A). You can reach this stop using any of the buses numbering 3, 11, 12, 53, 87, 88, 159, 453, 750, 751, 793, N3, N11, N44 and N52. Move North on Parliament St/A3212 towards King Charles St. Turn left onto King Charles St. Turn right and the London Parks and Gardens Trust will be on your left.
