Overview of Ottawa’s Sports Teams
Ottawa has a long and storied sports history. The original Ottawa Senators were one of the founding NHL teams, winning 11 Stanley Cups in the early 1900’s. The team moved to America in 1932 and did not return to the Canadian capital until 1992. Since then, however, they have become Ottawa’s home town team, and offer spectators and fans an unforgettable sports experience every time they play.
Beyond professional hockey, the city and its surrounding areas also offer both an OHL (Ontario Hockey League) and QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) team that have storied histories and passionate local fan bases.
In addition to the professional teams that thrill spectators, Ottawa also has a strong tradition of excellent University sports teams, particularly the Basketball programs at Carleton University. All in all, given the bevy of exciting sports teams on offer, and their passionate fans to boot, Ottawa is an underestimated sports town.

Ottawa Senators
The Senators are Ottawa's lone North American professional sports team – while the team has a complicated history, the current club was valued at $220 million by Forbes Magazine in 2012. The city is passionate about their boys in red and a trip to the Scotiabank Place (which opened in 1996, and has a 20,500 capacity) to watch them play is definitely worth it. Catch a highly-charged ice hockey game between the Senators and their rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs, if possible.

Ottawa 67's
Almost as famous as the Senators, the Ottawa 67's represent the most successful sports team in Ottawa. This team has been a consistent winner since their inaugural 1967 season, and provides a high level of play for the ultimate spectator experience.

Gatineau Olympiques
Right across the Ontario-Quebec border, the Olympiques have been the local team for hockey crazy Gatineau residents since 1973. Watching pretty much any game this team plays is bound to take you through an exciting and authentic experience of high level hockey.

University Sports
Both Carleton University and Ottawa University are considered rivals in the athletic arena, and have competitive teams in a plethora of sports. Locals and students have been showing their support and attending games for decades. Sports include hockey, football, soccer, basketball and volleyball, amongst others.
