Public & National Holidays in Iran

Holidays are an important part of every society. Not even a single group of people can afford to believe only in working. It is very important for nations to enjoy holidays to stay fresh and well focussed.

Every country observe several national and public holidays. These days are observed in commemoration of different national and traditional occasions. Similar is the situation in Iran.

Unlike the entire world, Iran uses three different calendars: Iranian calendar, lunar Islamic calendar and Gregorian calendar. There are exceptions, but most of the public and national holidays in Iran are of religious nature.

    Solar Holidays


    Nowrooz (Farvardin 01-04)

    Also known as Nowruz, it is observed at the start of Iranian New Year. It is also referred as Persian New Year. Usually, a lot of cultural and traditional activities take place on this occasion.

    Islamic Republic Day (Farvardin 12)

    It is a national day, observed keenly all across the country. On the 12th of the Iranian month of Farvardin, a national referendum was held in Iran, when the people choose the unique Islamic Republic System of government.

    Nature Day (Farvardin 13)

    It is also known as Sizde-Bedar. Since, the ancient times, leaving the house and spending the day outdoors has been a tradition in Iran.

    Khomeini's death (Khordad 14)

    On this day, the Iranians give tribute to their hero, Khomeini.

    Revolt of Khordad 15 (Khordad 15)

    In 1963, a great protest was launched against the arrest of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. This day is observed in commemoration of those public demonstrations.

    Victory of the Iranian Revolution (Bahman 22)

    Iranian revolution is the biggest event in the history of Iran. On the 22nd of the Iranian month of Bahman, the revolution day is observed in Iran.

    Nationalization of Oil Industry (Esfand 29)

    Oil plays a massive role in Iran’s economy, and since the nationalisation of Oil Industry, the country is making great progress.

    Ashura

    On the ninth and tenth of the Islamic month of Muharram, the Iranians pay tribute to Imam Hussain for his great sacrifice.

    Arba'een of Imam Hussain

    A religious observation, observed exactly 40 days after Ashura.

    Demise of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Martyrdom of Imam Hassan

    This day is for giving tribute to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his grandson, Imam Hassan.

    Martyrdom of Imam Reza

    On 29th of the Islamic month, Safar, a tribute is given to Imam Reza.

    Birth of Muhammad (PBUH) and Imam Jafar

    It is celebrated on 17th Rabi'-ul-Awwal – the third Islamic month.

    Martyrdom of Fatima

    The day is observed on the 3rd Jamaad-ath-Thaanee, the fourth Islamic month.

    Birth of Imam Ali

    The Iranian celebrates this day very enthusiastically. Many religious activities take place on the day.

    Mission of Muhammad (PBUH)

    The 27th of the Islamic month of Rajab is dedicated to the mission of Muhammad (PBUH).

    Birth of Imam Mahdi

    Imam Mahdi, a great Islamic personality, holds great respect among the Islamic world.

    Martyrdom of Imam Ali

    The entire Islamic world pays tribute to Imam Ali on this day.

    Eid ul-Fitr (End of Ramadhan)

    It is a religious event, celebrated all across the Islamic world at the end of the fasting month, Ramadan.

    Martyrdom of Imam Jafar

    The day is observed on the 25th of the Islamic month of Shawwal.

    Eid ul-Adha (Ghurban)

    It is another Islamic event that is celebrated by the entire Islamic community.

    Eid al-Ghadeer

    On the 18th of Islamic month of Dh-ul-Hajja, this day is observed in Iran.
