Remembrance Day in London

The day of the ‘glorious dead’, Remembrance Day is a moment to pause and applaud the martyrs of peace. Every November 11th at 11 a.m. London stops and pays a two minute long silent tribute to those who gave away their lives in the world war and the conflicts after it. Today, Remembrance Day also encompasses the servicemen who sacrificed their lives for their country in order to maintain peace and protect the fellowmen. London goes into mourning this day but simultaneously renews its commitment to contribute for world peace.

    History:

    11th November marked the end of the First World War. Since then the two minute silence and Remembrance Day are being celebrated every year. Since then this day serves as a salute to all servicemen who fight out in the danger while we sleep in peace. British troops are fighting a brave war against terrorism in Afghanistan right now which makes them rightful heroes of modern times.

    Activities:

    The British Legion, an organization dedicated to the care of British servicemen holds a number of events as an opportunity to pay rich tribute to our heroes. The Legion truly holds to its moto of "If we are to maintain our peace and freedom, we must always remember".  These events include Two minute silence, seminars Festival of Remembrance and the most illustrious of all, the parade at Cenotaph in Whitehall. This parade and service is held on the Remembrance Sunday and is a highlight among all the events. It is held by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. Wreaths are laid by the Queen, Cabinet members, Army heads and representatives from the Commonwealth countries. A veterans parade is scheduled to take place near Cenotaph and as each section passes, a wreath is laid by them. This whole affair is organised by the Royal British Legion.

    How to Get there:

    By Tube

    The Westminster Tube Station is just 0.2 miles from the Cenotaph. It takes hardly 5 minutes to reach to the destination from the station, Head West on  Bridge St. and then right into Parliament street. View Map

    By Bus

    Parliament Square (Stop) is the closest bus stop to the Cenotaph. you can board the buses 3, 11, 12, 24, 53, 87, 159, 453, N2, N3, N11, N44, N52, N87 and N109. After leaving the stop head north and less than 20 seconds you will be standing in front of your destination.
