Simple Large Dutch Bang Braid
Rihanna’s hairstyle of choice for the 2011 Met Gala, the simple large Dutch bang braid is an elegant and fun look that can be used for both fancy evenings, and as a casual but cute do for everyday wear. The technical opposite of a French braid, the simple large Dutch bang braid is made by braiding the side strands under the middle strand, as opposed to over it. While it might seem difficult to master, practice makes perfect, so persevere in order to master the art of the Dutch braid.
Things Required:
– A hairbrush
– Elastic bands
– Bobby pins
– A hair clip
– Hairspray

To begin, make sure your hair is not freshly washed – while this might seem odd, as most hairstyles call for clean, freshly washed hair, braids are best made with hair that is not entirely fresh. Make sure it has been a day or two since you washed it, and brush out your hair, so they will be knot free.

Now, start by making a deep side part in your hair (from the left or the right, as you prefer). At this point, you can choose to leave some hair out of the braid – if you do, simply use a clip to pin this out of the way. The simple large Dutch bang braid will work for most styles of bangs, no matter how short.

Separate a small section of hair at the beginning of your side part, and divide this into three strands. Now, with these three strands, start braiding along the side of your face – as you braid, make sure you insert both side strands under the middle. Keep incorporating more sections of hair from the sides (much like you would with a regular French braid), as you move along the outline of your face.

Once the braid reaches the length you desire, tie the end up with an elastic band. There are countless styles you can make, just by adjusting the length. You can stop braiding when you reach your ear, secure it there and then leave the rest of your hair down, or you can keep braiding, and incorporate all of your hair in the style to make a very long and thick braid.

After your braid is the style and length you like, proceed to add the final touches. Gently pull at the sides of the braid, to make it look wider – if you have short bangs, or a layered cut, this might cause some strands to slip out. However, keep adjusting the braid until it is bigger, and leave the loose strands alone for now. Once this is done, adjust the loose strands with bobby pins, and use some hairspray and your fingers to smooth out any frizz or flyaways. Your simple large Dutch bang braid is now ready.
