You must have a college degree in order to carry on your studies in a medical school. Furthermore, you have to get good grades in order to get into a school of your choice as the merits of medical institutions are usually very high. You have to study biology, physics, English, mathematics and organic chemistry in your undergraduate classes. Besides, you will also have to take some courses in social sciences and humanities. In addition, try to work as a volunteer at any local hospital or any clinic in order to get practical exposure of your field.

Take admission in a medical school for which you will have to submit your transcript, you Medical College Admission Test scores and two or three recommendations letters. Generally, the medical schools offer four-year programmes in the field of physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, medical ethics, pharmacology, anatomy and laws governing medicine.

Then, you will have to get into a residency programme. This programme can last from 5 to 7 years (it depends on what kind of surgeon you are looking forward to become). During the programme, you will be rotated amongst various hospitals and clinics to get practical experience as a surgeon. After completing the programme, you will have to get the certification and the required licence from the American Osteopathic Association and the American Board of Medical Specialists.
