Trafalgar Square London

Trafalgar Square is located in the area of Charing Cross. This spacious zone is present in the premises of City of Westminster Borough. The presence of beautifully sculptured statues has placed Trafalgar among the famous attractions of not only London, but the entire United Kingdom. In the middle of the square, a monument by the name of Nelson’s Column is situated which is being guarded by four statues of lions. Trafalgar Square has a rich history attached to it, which is another reason why this place is so fascinating and attractive. Though owner of Trafalgar square is the Queen on throne, but it is still under the administration of greater London Authority. Besides a fusion of modern and vintage architecture, this area is also famous for being the venue for various community and political gatherings. But on New Year’s Eve, Trafalgar Square’s jaw dropping view is mostly admired by people.

    History:

    Initially Trafalgar Square was supposed to be named as “King William the Fourth's Square,” but architect George Ledwell Taylor named this spacious area in the honor of British Naval victory over France in the Battle of Trafalgar that was held in 1805. Year 1820, George IV started clearing the zone and with the collaboration of architect John Nash, they completed the entire construction in 1845. The huge central area has three roads on the sides, but the road which was present around the square has been closed for traffic in 2003. Towards the east, the square is joined with Strand (street in Westminster), south is connected with the Whitehall, whereas the southeast corner of Trafalgar Square is adjacent to Admiralty Arch.

    Trafalgar Square’s Attractions:

    Plinths

    Three plinths are present in the squarer, with the statue of George IV, General Sir Charles James Napier and Major-General Sir Henry Havelock.

    Fountain

    In 1840, a fountain was constructed within Trafalgar Square in order to utilize the empty space. Now LED system is installed in the fountain, which makes the view more precious and breath taking at night.

    Nearest Attractions

    On the north side of Trafalgar Square, the National Library is situated which is also famous for being an art museum.

    The High Commission of Canada of London’s building by the name of Canada House is located in the west direction.

    The Anglican church St Martin-in-the-Fields can be viewed in the east direction.

    High Commission of South Africa and the Westminster Street Strand, both are situated in the east direction.

    In the southeast direction,  the official building of London - Admiralty Arch - grants pedestrians access to make their way out by heading on The Mall.

    By Tube:

    By walk it will take total 2 minutes to wrap up the distance between Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross transit station. Initialize your walk in the northwest direction after coming out of the station. Pass the roundabout and take second the exit. After taking two left turns, you will reach Trafalgar Square.     By Bus:

    Nearest bus stop is Trafalgar Square (Stop C). In order to travel by bus take route number 24, 29, 176, N5, N20, N29, N41 or N279.‎
