Yahoo Appoints Google’s Marissa Mayer As CEO
Google senior executive Marissa Mayer has been appointed as a next chief executive of the technology firm Yahoo.
A 37-year old Mayer, will become the fifth Yahoo CEO in the last five years in an attempt to burnish its reputation and improve its financial growth.
Ms Mayer said in a statement that she was “honored and delighted” to work as Yahoo’s chief executive.
This year in May, CEO Scott Thompson had to step down after being charged of putting a fake computer degree on his CV. Last year in September, CEO Carol Bartz was fired from the company. He served as Yahoo’s chief executive for more than two years.
Yahoo has been struggling to survive in the industry after the influx of search rivals including Google and most importantly the emergence of various social giants such as Facebook and Twitter.
At the moment, the company’s stock is worth less than half its peak value.
The news portal at Yahoo still attracts huge amount of traffic. But other services, such as its search engine and email, are facing extremely tough time. The company used to generate a hefty amount of revenue from display advertising which has also been dwindled.
“I look forward to working with the company’s dedicated employees to bring innovative products, content, and personalised experiences to users and advertisers all around the world,” Ms Mayer said.
She is considered as one of very few women in the technology industry to appear as top executive of a major technology firm.
Graduated from California’s Stanford University, Ms Mayer was appointed in Google in 1999, and was the first female engineer in the company.
She worked on developing the Google search engine and Google’s home page.
Before leaving Google, she was working on Google’s mapping services, which include Google Maps, Earth, Local and Street View.
Presently, she is a board member of renowned organizations including Walmart, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Ballet and New York City Ballet. Ms Mayer will soon join Yahoo’s board as well.
